Sustainable Development School Outreach Programme

Objectives

The purpose of this programme is to allow secondary school students, as future leaders of our community, to grasp and understand the concept and importance of sustainable development (SD).

Target Groups

Secondary School Students

Duration

Planned to be held from September 2020 to July 2021

Programme Contents

The programme comprises interactive dramas, seminars and workshops. Schools are welcome to choose one or more of the above activities to be held at different times in the same school year.

Interactive Drama

  • Interactive drama will convey the SD concept and its implications on our environment, society and economy to students in an interactive and lively manner. The drama performance will last for about 50 minutes.

Seminar

  • One of the Council for Sustainable Development (SDC)'s stakeholder partners (including different non-government organisations, green groups or other organisations) as a speaker will introduce a SD-related topic with interactive presentation of global or local examples and topical issues. There will be follow-up discussion with students. The seminar will last for about 50 minutes.

Workshop

  • The workshops will adopt a case study approach to help students develop a SD value and a self-initiated learning attitude with a cross-subject approach. It is suitable for secondary school students, especially who are studying Geography, General Studies and members of SD-related societies (such as environmental protection society). There are three options of workshop for selection:

    Option A

The workshop comprises two sessions and each session will last for about one hour. At the first session, one of the SDC's stakeholder partners (including different non-government organisations, green groups or other organisations) as a speaker will brief students on the background of a SD-related case in the participating school. Students will be invited to gather relevant information and conduct research. At the subsequent session, the speaker will go to the participating school and discuss with students the case from social, economic and environmental perspectives and assess their impacts. Through discussion, sharing, role-play, reporting and presentation, students will have an in-depth understanding on the subject issue.

    Option B

The workshop comprises two sessions. The first session will be a field trip in that the participating school will arrange the transportation and school teacher(s) for the students to visit a site where one of the SDC's stakeholder partners (including different non-government organisations, green groups or other organisations) implements a SD-related project. The relevant organisation will brief students on site about the background of the SD-related case and allow the students to understand the SD practice through the field trip. Students will be invited to gather relevant information and conduct research. The field trip will last for about one and a half hours. At the subsequent session, the speaker will go to the participating school and discuss with students the case from social, economic and environmental perspectives and assess their impacts. Through discussion, sharing, role-play, reporting and presentation, students will have an in-depth understanding on the subject issue. The second discussion will last for about one hour.

    Option C

There is only one session of the workshop. The session will be a field trip in that the participating school will arrange the transportation and school teacher(s) for the students to visit a site where one of the SDC's stakeholder partners (including different non-government organisations, green groups or other organisations) implements a SD-related project. The relevant organisation will brief students on site about the background of the SD-related case and allow the students to understand the SD practice through the field trip. The field trip will last for about one and a half hours.
